Gauge: 7 sts/8 rows per inch
Cast on: 52 st using a 3 color braiding technique. Used 2 strands of white and one sagebrush.

Anther improvised pair of fair isle mittens, this time for my sister Emily. This is based loosely off of the Semplice pattern, though with obvious modifications.
I decided to do bands of patterns that won’t be interrupted by an allover motif on the palm. I’m alternating the MC per strand and limiting the patterns to pointy chevrons and diamonds. Picked out the patterns from Alice Starmore’s Book of Fair Isle Knitting.
Ribbing: 1x1 corrugated, worked for 2 inches
Thumb:
I started the increases for the thumb immediately after the ribbing, increasing 2 stitches every other row. Removed stitches when they were 14 stitches (2 inches worth) between my markers. Increases made with K1FB before 1st marker and after the 2nd.
I picked up 6 stitches the first round, then k2tog the last original/first pu stitch and the last pu and first original stitch (let me know if that doesn’t make sense). I worked 14 rows total (including round where I picked up stitches) then decrease 4 stitches (sm, k2tog, k til 2 from 2nd marker, ssk, k2tog, knit til 2 from start of round ssk), k one row, decreased again, then grafted the thumb together.
Mitten Body:
I knit 40 rows (4 different patterns) then decreased like the thumb until I had 30 stitches left. Grafted with kitchener stitch.
