This is a pattern my niece found in my grandmother’s things. It has several problems.
-
It’s too small! My niece pointed out that it calls for no. 5 needles and UK 5s are like US 9s (5.5 mm). It probably means UK 5.
-
The row that reduces from 100 sts to 50 sts all at once causes things to bunch up.
-
The ear flaps curl.
My grandmother was a fantastic knitter, so I can’t believe she came up with this. She probably copied it down from somewhere and I’m going to guess never made it.
I made it top down in the round to avoid both seaming and picking up stitches for the ear flaps.

Should have ended with a few inches of I-cord. Then you could tie it on with the earflaps down!
