I need another FL project & this has been in my queue forever. I’m not sure if I have enough of the Dark Horse, so I’m going to incorporate the beautiful hand dyed & spun yarn from the mill Gwen took me to. It is a DK weight, but it should be ok. Insert 2 rows of mill yarn after 4 rows of solid green.
I hate how a garter edge pulls up, so I did short rows on the garter stitches on the row after every other variegated yarn section. I noticed how much nicer the top front garter section looked on the one done in one piece (Valerie Corner’s) instead of the seamed ones. I started with the left front, stopped at 9”, then did the right front & connected them to do the top together so I don’t have a seam in the middle.
I decided I wanted the sleeves just a bit longer, so I did 6 more rounds (total of 38 rounds of SS) before starting decreases & knitting flat. I hope that doesn’t make the upper sleeve too tight.
2/5/25 - I am concerned that the sleeve shaping is different than the front & back pieces. For the sleeves you don’t start with decreases every other row, but every 4th row. So how are the pieces going to match up?!
2/23/25 - no, the pieces wouldn’t match. I checked when I was 7” into the decreases & still had 16 stitches left to decrease. Using the stated gauge, the sleeve decrease section would be 9.71”, not 7.25”. I checked the front & back pieces I had finished & they aren’t the same either (off by about a half inch). I like a generous sleeve opening, so I am making the front & sleeves match the back’s 8”.
I decided to start the sleeve over because I had done up to the decreases ITR & noticed a difference in my tension (my flat knitting is looser). I like a generous sleeve opening, so I am going to make the front & sleeves match the back’s 8”. Argh, math makes my head hurt! Do decreases EOR 8 times (34 stitches), 3 rows even (2 in the variegated yarn), then decreases every 4th row after. At 8.5” for the sleeve opening, I had 16 stitches left instead of 14, but I am leaving it that way.
2/26/25 - Well, I was just finishing up the last sleeve when I noticed that I have been working from two different dye lots. So, instead of sewing it together, I am ripping it out…. Each piece was done with the same yarn, but one arm matches the front & one matches the back. And there isn’t enough of either dye lot to do the entire sweater.
