this is the “pattern” I followed, which is a mash up of about 4 different patterns, plus my own insight

cast on 96 sts on size 6 (4mm) DPNs in orange yarn
k1, p1 around for 3 rows
stockinette stitch for about 3.5 inches

switch to yellow yarn, stockinette stitch for about 3.5 inches
with yellow yarn, decrease as follows:
row 1 - k2 tog around (48 sts)
row 2 - k2 tog around (24 sts)
row 3 - k2 tog around (12 sts)

weave in long tail and pull to tighten.

for ear flaps:

from beginning of first round, count 11 sts, pick up 24 sts along first row. knit stockinette stitch, making sure knit sts are on outside of flap, for about 3 inches ending on a purl row
decrease as follows:
k2 tog, k until last 2 sts, k2 tog
p2 tog, p until last 2 sts, p2 tog
until there are 8 sts left

bind off, knitting the first 2 sts and last 2 sts tog, leave a 4-5” tail

repeat on other side of hat

add a 2-3” diameter pom pom to the top, mine used equal amounts of all colors, but most Jayne hats use mostly the red/dark orange yarn with smaller amounts of yellow and light orange.
