If you can knit, purl, and make a 3 stitch cable, you can make this. This is my first entrelac project. I did many things wrong with it, and it still turned out okay.
My first Jay Petersen project! He’s mathemagical! I might very well be the designer’s worst nightmare:
This pattern is very much a schematic.
Best approached as a puzzle.
1. Have you knitted lots of entrelac?
No, this is my first attempt ever, lol.
2. Have you read a lot of Barbara Walker books?
No, but I plan to.
3. Have you read a lot of Elizabeth Zimmerman?
No, but I plan to.
4. Do you like to figure things out?
Yes.
-
The squares always have the cable going from the bottom right to the top left.
-
Always make a selvedge on the knit side. It’s prettier once the square is joined to another square. Do this even when you’re just joining that edge to another square.
-
On side joins, leave your 3 stitch cable on waste yarn or a stitch holder.
-
The garter side makes a square, and the knit side a triangle.
-
Do not block as you go or make the “squares” square, unless you want a cube instead of a sphere. 13x21 and 13x22 is not supposed to be a perfect square.
-
Don’t poke your corners while stuffing if you want a sphere.
-
My pictures try to have the last completed square at or near the top left, and I took a photo after each square (after the 3rd.)
-
Cables always go over/under.
-
Mark your squares and cables well.
Watch this space for a future edit to link some tutorials about some things I did incorrectly when making this.
From the author himself, here’s a video about picking up from knitting selvedges.
Need help on picking up? Try this video, which shows picking up from the tops and sides of both knit and garter selvedges.
