Notes

Such a feel good sweater! Love the color blocks and the fabric, which has airconditioning properties.
Not wanting a round yoke for these bold blocks, I used the Baldric pattern (raglan shape) for basic outline.

There’s something unique about this Ístex lace yarn. It resembles the look and feel of heather. It is coarse and springy and yet soft to the skin, light and warm. It blooms beautifully with blocking. Also, it has a huge bias.
(Istex website: to eliminate the bias of Einband, knit two strands together from either end of the cake. But that’s for another day.)

Mods: raglan, top down, no holes.
Update: the sleeves keep shrinking. What’s up with that? Smth ab the yarn? It’s a mystery. Meanwhile, I keep adding rows to the cuffs - yay for top down.

Row counts colour blocks:

1* black neck - 4 or 5 (plus extra from short row shaping);
2* Grey shoulders - 20;
3* Yellow shoulders - 12;
4* White chest - 12;
5* Black rib case - 24 (sleeves: + 3);
6* Grey stomach - 12 (sleeves: + 2);
7* White belly - 32 (sleeves: + 3);
8* Yellow part hem - 17 (originally 12) (sleeves: + 2) (+5);
9* Black part of hem - 17 (originally 12) (sleeves: + 2) (+5).

At sleeve separation: switch from white to black, color block 4 to 5.
At this point I have 41 (+3) at right sleeve and 42 (+4) at left sleeve.

No garter panels. Nine underarm st. instead of ten. Faux side seam as minimal bias control.

Ndl size 5.5 mm. Picked up underarm stitches to get a total of 48., as per pattern. At the same time, knit 2 tog at the sides where knit direction changes, to avoid “holes”.

(For the other Baldric, Fluitenkruidenuientrui, I did 3 st. extra per sleeve. With this one I want to go for slightly narrower sleeves. Gauge is practically the same with both sweaters.)

Blocked (bloomed!), sewn in ends. Sleeves seem a tad too short. Should have done the m2?
The very tips of the yarn ends have bloomed even more than the sweater itself; bloomed into incredibly lush and soft fluff. So, second round of soaking. On this hot and windy day this sweater will be dry in no time.

My favorite mistake: make the sleeves too short & then hoping they will grow enough with wash & wear. Which they never do.
So, adding a few rnds of yellow and of black.

Meanwhile, it’s hot outside and this sweater feels like the gentlest breeze of AC.

June 17, 2023

Lengthened sleeve cufs w/ 5 rnds both yellow and black.
So: from 14 —> 19 rnds. Ribbing from row 11 up. (Last two rnds, 1 plain stockinette and 1 BO, are not counted since they add minimal length)

Lengthened body w/ 5 rnds.

Edited May 22 note.

Another washing and the sleeves are too short again. Darn!
Perhaps they’re crawling up bc they’re tight? Redo them oversized? I love this sweater too much to leave it like this.

Einband in this gauge is just magic. Here we are in late autumn and this sweater is still very cosy. Yet on a warm summer’s day it’s airy and cool when worn as a single layer.
It’s also a good indoor winter sweater with the wood stove working overtime.

Such a wonderful summer sweater, providing both insulation and airconditioning. Definitely more comfortable on warm days than my cotton summer knits.
But darn those ever shrinking sleeves…! My theory still is that it has to do with the self-grabbing quality of the small fibers: methinks they don’t care for loose gauge, they just want to stick close together.
Might have to do more washing and BLOCKING - now there’s a thought.
