Post-blocking update: I blocked over a plate (softened with plastic bags) as suggested, and it really did open up the mesh. I’m still not super happy with the overall shape, but maybe it’s just not the hat for me (plus, I was sick when I knitted this so if anything’s wrong it’s probably my fault, not the pattern’s). I’ve worn this a few times and it’s like a warm hug on my head. Malabrigo yarn is lovely!

Update: I’m yet to block this, so when I do I’ll do it over a plate, which has been suggested to open up the mesh. Too tricky to do it while traveling (which is also why there’s no photo) but will update with eventual results…

Hmm. I don’t love this, but it’s wearable. I think I want more slouch in the diameter - and that’s even after I went up a needle size for the mesh. It’s just a little too bucket-beanie-ish, not quite beret-ish enough for me as is. But it’s serviceable, and the Malabrigo yarn is lovely, a great recommendation for this project.

Used 4.5mm needles for the ribbing, went up to 5mm for the mesh, as suggested by the pattern for a slouchier beret.
