I gave the pattern 3 stars because there is a mistake in the pattern, there is no chart for the cable section, and the mitts, as designed and pictured, look quite ill-fitting and sloppy. But I found the cable very interesting, and I love knitting mitts on 44 stitches in worsted weight yarn. So I made a change that I think improves the design and fit– knitting the palm in ribbing–and I adjusted the thumb gusset and length of the hand to suit my preferences.
Modifications:
All my mods were done to accommodate Magic Loop and to give the mitts a better fit and neater appearance.
- I divided the stitches 22 front, 22 back.
- On the front, I worked the pattern stitches as K2, work the 18 cable pattern stitches, K2. (2 + 18+ 2 = 22 stitches) On the back, I continued the 2 x 2 rib pattern (P2, K2) across, ending with a P2.
- I changed the thumb gusset to begin on the back needle––P2, M1R, K2, M1L, P2, (K2, P2) to end of round and worked the increases every 3rd round for the right hand and (P2, K2) to 6 stitches before the end of the round, then P2, M1R, K2, M1L, P2.
- Because of the slower rate of increases for the thumb, I repeated rounds 10-15 twice instead of once, and then I “closed” the thumb on round “27” instead of round “28.”
Also, I realized at some point that I had crossed my cables in the wrong direction, to the right instead of to the left, but it doesn’t really matter as long as I was consistent. This wouldn’t have happened if I had worked the twists the way the directions instruct, but I used a cable needle instead and held the first stitch to the back instead of to the right.
ERRATA: Row 35 and 36 are a mistake and shouldn’t be there. The pattern section should end with row 34, and the written instructions below the “pattern instructions” tell you to work the 34 pattern rows.
