The pattern is written for sport weight yarn, but I used fingering weight, so I made the largest size. 72 stitches is my normal sock cast on in fingering weight, so the pattern and yarn were perfect.
Modifications:
- By mistake, I left out the purl round that separates the ribbing from the beginning of the skyp pattern. I didn’t realize this until I started the second sock. I rather like the way the pattern flows from the ribbing, so it’s no great loss.
- For the heel, I used heel stitch and a 2-stitch garter edging on each side of the heel flap. Then, after turning the heel, I worked all the gusset decreases on each side of the two center heel instead of on each side of the instep.
For a change, I worked a wedge toe and grafted the end. Usually I work a round toe. I don’t do this to avoid grafting. I can graft in my sleep. I just normally prefer the look and fit of a round toe over a wedge toe. But this yarn seemed to want to become a wedge toe, so I went along for the ride.
Although the heel fits pretty well, I’m not as fond of having the gusset decreases all line up on either side of the center of the heel. I prefer the fit and look of the gusset decreases when they begin at the edge of the heel and angle inward toward the center of the heel, as I did on the Reversible Rib Socks.
