That funny dangley bit on a turkey’s beak is called a snood.
Merv, my stuffed vulture, has been perched on a shelf in my cube at work for the last month. My boss’ boss came by and asked about him, and I said he was there since it was October. He must’ve thought I was afraid he was objecting to Merv’s presence, because he said it would be ok if I had a vulture in my cube year round.
That inspired me to plan some costumes for Merv. Felt, yarn, and glue in hand, I set to work.
Here is Merv the Griffon Vulture sporting his Turkey Pilgrim costume.
It really barely counts as a crochet “project”, since it took only about 15 minutes, including stitching the elastic thread to the back so it will stay on the vulture’s beak, and sewing a red pipe cleaner into it so it holds its shape.
The hat and tail were made with white glue, felt, and acrylic paint. The fluffy white end on the tail is a double strand of novelty yarn, glued on. I added elastic thread designed for making bracelets to each of the costume pieces to hold them on, just like the elastic chin strap under a child’s party hat. It keeps them in place well enough for display, but they’re still easily removable. You can see the elastic in the close up photo of Merv’s head if you zoom to the full size.
Note: I only made the costume. Merv is a commercially produced stuffed toy by Hansa
