GAUGE: ~5sts = 1”

Front/back panel CO 96 sts ea. with size 6 needles
2x2 rib for 11 rows
Swap to size 8 needles
Place markers so that there are 12 seconds of 8 sts

Row 1 (WS): k1, p6, k1, p8. Repeat from
Row 2 (RS): p1, k6, p1, k2tog, k2, inc1¹, k3. Rep from
Row 3: same as row 1, and for all WS rows
Row 4: p1, k6, p1, k3, inc1, k2, sl1, k1, psso². Rep from

Continue in herringbone rib pattern until panel measures 17” from the CO edge (including ribbing).

¹ Increase by inserting the RH needle into the center of the back (into what looks like the purl, viewed from the WS) of the next st, one row down, on the LH needle.

² Slip one st, knitwise, to the RH needle. K the next st normally, then pass the slipped st over the knitted one and off the needle. This creates a right-leaning decrease that will lend symmetry to the herrigbone pattern, in conjunction with the left-leaning k2tog done in row 2.

NB: I referred to the Peter Easy pattern as a guideline for some measurements.
