Like the first Forth hat I knit from this pattern, for this set of hats, I used M1L and M1R increases, got 5 sts/inch on US 6s in stockinette, and followed the directions for an adult small; increasing to 92 sts.
First hat
Cast on with US 6s on July 9, 2022 - in the car coming back from Chelan. 4 tries to get that fiddly circular cast-on to work!
I knit stockinette until 7 inches from the cast-on, then about 1 inch of 2x2 ribbing using US 5s. I used the yarnover bind-off, knit from the wrong side, for a stretchy but neat edge.
I ended up knitting the version without a turned-up brim because the fiber was knitting up with blue and purple at the top, then greens and oranges, and then pinks; sort of a rainbow. If I had knit a turned-up brim, all the pink would have been hidden.
First hat finished on July 21, 2022. Used 36.5 g of the yarn; 93 yards. 75.8 g remain; plenty for a version with the turned-up brim.
Second hat
Cast on July 22, 2022, at my annual campout. Mistakenly was using US 5 DPNs until I had 16 sts in each section, then increased to US 6s.
Based on my first Forth Hat, turning row should be 8.5 inches from the cast-on.
Started the ribbing at about 8 inches of stockinette from the cast-on. Knit 3.25 inches of ribbing before the bind-off. I used used Lori’s Twisty Bind-off for a stretchy but no-flare edge. Finished Aug 26, 2022. 53.8 g used; 137 yards.
Freddie picked out the one with a brim, and Shep the one without, for New Year’s 2023.
