Cast on 3/21/2021. I knit the set-up rows and first 14 rows as called for in the pattern. I don’t like the way the slipping stitches makes the edges of the shawl tight - I’d prefer something with more give. I tested it with yarnovers to increase instead, but thought it made it too airy. Ripped again and am using kfb and pfb increases but am eliminating the slipped stitches - so each row ends with a kfb or pfb instead of a slipped stitch. Liking how this is knitting up much better!
3/23/2021: After knitting about 30 or so rows, I decided I didn’t like the way the sides of the shawl were curling a bit - it is stockinette with some reversed stockinette rows, basically. Ripped and tried again - hopefully the fourth time is the charm! I’m starting and ending each row with KFB, which hopefully is giving me a little garter border along the shawl.
5/3/2021: Fourth time was the charm! I used a knit stitch, or kfb when increasing, as the first and last stitch on each row, which kept the edge a bit stretchy. I weighed my yarn several times throughout the project and was feeling confident I’d win yarn chicken … but no, I had to add an extra decrease to the last two decrease rows in order to finish with the yarn I had. I also did a Jeny’s surprisingly stretchy bind-off instead of the standard BO - and that lip of the shawl still curls a bit due to the stockinette/reverse stockinette nature of the pattern.
I really enjoyed knitting with my handspun and the way the colors striped up. Because I like shawls to lie a bit flatter, I’ think I’d prefer this pattern in garter, or with a bit of a garter border along the long edge.
I think this will make a generous scarf, or maybe after blocking, a nice shawl, although a bit small for me as a shawl. Gift box it is.
