Notes

I am following the Helix hat pattern for the number of stitches to cast on and the helix patterning, but I’m incorporating the shape of the Simple hat. I’ve made a bunch of the Helix hats and so want to mix it up a little!

Start of project yarns:
Plume: 38.9 g
Mocha & Plum: 20.6 g
Fall Foliage: 48.0 g
Earth: 22.0 g
Gold in the Sky: 5.1 g

First Hat (purple brim)
Dec 31, 2022: Cast on 88 sts with the Plume yarn in US 6s. Switched to helix stripes in stockinette on US 8s after 1.5 inches of 2x2 ribbing. I’m getting 4 sts/inch stockinette so it’s knitting up too big. Will rip and restart with 80 sts.

Jan 6, 2023: Finished the hat. I cast on 80 sts with the Plume, added in the Fall Foliage and the two browns (Mocha & Plum and Gold in the Sky) held together as the helix stripes. At 6 inches from the cast-on edge, I decreased 4 sts evenly to get 76. At about 7 inches from the cast-on edge, I started the decreases from the Simple patterns.

80 sts ends up being a little tight for my head, so I’d call this teen or small adult size.

Used:
Plume: 16.6 g, 46 yards
Mocha & Plum: 6.7 g, 24 yards
Fall Foliage: 9.9 g, 22 yards
Gold in the Sky: 5.1 g, 22 yards (all used up!)

114 yards out

Second hat (brown brim)

Jan 6: Cast on 88 sts with the Fall Foliage, using US 6s. I added in Plume and Mocha & Plum as the stripes, but decided I didn’t like it. The Fall Foliage was going through a white/gray/yellow/pale orange bit for the brim, and the Mocha & Plum was too thin compared to the other yarns. Ripped.

Jan 7: Cast on 88 sts with the Mocha & Plum held doubled, using US 6s. Knit until this was gone, about two inches. Striped in the Plume, the Earth, and the Fall Foliage. At 6.5 inches from the cast-on edge decreased 4 sts evenly using k2tog. Started the decreases, based on the Simple. pattern at 7 inches.

Finished Jan 8, 2023. Knit most of the hat at my annual retreat with friends.

Yarns used:
Plume: 8.9 g, 25 yards
Mocha & Plum: 13.9 g, 49 yards (all used up!)
Earth: 12.0 g, 24.5 yards
Fall Foliage: 10.7 g, 23.7 yards

122 yards out!

Sept 2023: Gave away to a “winter warmth” charity drive.
