I’ve been holding on to some handspun Shetland yarn with the idea of a project that will be felted, because I find the yarn a little scratchy for hats - I’m much more a Merino, Polwarth, Cormo, Targhee kinda gal. But I’ve been thinking about this aforementioned project for at least seven years at this point, so clearly I don’t actually want to knit it. I spun this yarn 12 years ago and want to use it! So I am going knit a hat for the gift box. I’ll try the single-cable hat I’ve knit for kids twice now and make it in adult size.
Mar 25, 2023: CO 96 sts using US 6s. Knit 2x2 ribbing for two inches.
Switched to US 7s for the body of the hat. Knit 86 sts, PM for cable column, p2, k6, p2.
Continue in this pattern for the body of the hat prior to decreases, cabling C6F every 8 rows.
Apr 2, 2023: started the decreases at about 5.5 inches from cast-on, which was also the row after the third cable turn.
Finished the hat on April 5. I had to fuss with the decreases a bit, but figured out that dividing into 8 sets of 12 and decreasing every other row until there were 6 sts between every marker worked well. This allowed for one more cable turn (8 rows total) than the bulky version of this hat I’ve knit.
Blocked Sept 13, 2023. It really helped even out the stitches and make the cable pop.
Sept 2023: Gave away to a “winter warmth” charity drive.
