Doreen chose these socks when she came to make a housecall, 18 Nov 2012. I’m very happy there were several pair of machine-washable socks to choose from! I will wash them and weave in ends, then deliver :)
NB: Seriously consider not knitting more dark socks. Hard to see, especially if ripping back and picking up stitches. Toe grafts were a visual challenge.
co 64, US3, with knitted cast-on. Purl one row flat, then connect and start waving lace edge pattern to ~row 10; after row 6, switch to US1. Leg: kelp stitch pattern. stop leg after a 16th row.
30-st flap, so instep has P2 at beg and end.
slipstitch heel flap; 34 rows.
Turn heel: k17, ssk, k1, turn
sl1, p5, p2tog, p1, turn, etc.
switch to US0 to pick up 17-st gusset; 20 rows for gusset.
knit foot on US0.
instep: maintain 2P pattern, with stockinette replacing fronds.
20 Apr 12 update: ran out of first ball near end of first foot; there had been a knot in the skein, and this was the smaller ball. CO second sock to catch up; into second kelp repeat by evening. (note for future reference: do not try to start a lace pattern while “just listening to” Mike Rowe’s Dirty Jobs on netflix. Had to rip out the first two rows 4 times!)
toe - experiment: dec4 every other row til 44st. then dec4 each round. Had to rip and lengthen the first toe, but I do like this shaping better than EOR for entire toe. Just need to calculate overall length for faster decrease rate.
