Notes

This was a Christmas present for my sister-in-law.

I would have preferred to make this with 100% cotton yarn (for extra durability) as this is a door stopper, but I didn’t have enough of any green shades. We recently moved from the UK to Texas, USA and on my first trip to the local Michaels I couldn’t find any 100% cotton yarn in green. I chose Caron Blossom Cakes, which is 61% cotton 39% acrylic and the frog looks very cute.

I used different yarn weights with different hook sizes: Yellow aran for the toe pads and main yarn with a 3.5mm hook (I would have used a 3.75mm instead, but couldn’t find my hook!); red size 3 thread for the tongue with a 2.5mm hook; black 4ply for the mouth and white 4ply for the eyes with a 2.75mm hook.

All pieces were crocheted using the “yarn under / yarn over” technique, except the legs and tongue.

I purchased the pattern as I did not have a lot of time to follow the whole YouTube video, but I found a few inconsistencies on the written pattern (rounds 8 and 9 of the mouth) and followed the YouTube version instead. I also used the video instructions to join the upper head and mouth, then make the lower part of the head. EDIT: I contacted the designer in regards to the above inconsistencies and she kindly responded she is correcting the pattern.

I filled the belly part with about 300g of HDPE plastic pellets. I used an old pair of tights (pantyhose) to make a “bag”, placed it inside the belly, then filled with pellets using a funnel just a couple of rounds before finishing the belly. It worked really well and the belly got very round and firm in the end.

This was a fun project to make and the recipient loved her gift. The head construction is very clever and the look of the finished frog makes me giggle.

Main yarn: 63g
