I believe that the simple granny square is a block just like any other building block. It’s small,simple with infinite possibilities, just like the infinite possibilities of buildings a brick creates . It was almost the first thing I crocheted.
Today,8 years after starting this marvelous journey into the oasis of crochet, I want to take a closer look at this miracle of a block. Not through the eyes someone who is just learning. I want to make a granny square without sweating for fear of losing a stitch or holding the hook in a wrong way, or losing control of the yarn, or the numerous other things that make a beginner lose focus into the actual block, or even the rush to make as many squares as needed for a bigger project.
Just a stand alone humble granny square.
I feel like a grandmother who is enjoying her grandchildren in a serene way that she missed raising her children.
Sorry for being so philosophical. I understand that millions of mostly women have made billions of this block all around the world for different reasons. Some to keep their children warm in their beds, some to keep their homes inviting, some to create beauty for themselves, and some for the sheer enjoyment of creation. I wonder what kinds of feelings were roaming around their souls while crocheting. As for me,I can’t help but love granny squares, and get excited each time I start making a new one, and stand back to admire it when it’s done.
