I started with the recommended hook, but it was too big. Then I tried a smaller hook, still based on the thread 2.75 mm (3.5 is listed on the packaging), but it’s just too large and makes sloppy loops.
So I’m ripping back (again) and going with a size 4 steel hook (2.0 mm). The thread fits into the throat of the hook, so I should be able to make tighter stitches.
2017-11-09 Blocking
Maybe I should have gone with a little bit smaller hook. I had trouble getting the large number of stitches into the puff flower.
On the other hand, upon soaking and blocking, the puff stitches flattened out; but will they stay that way when the doily dries?
However, maybe I just need to work slower (slower?! LOL) and more carefully on making my stitches tight. Can’t hurt, right?
I really hate tapered hooks though. I need to find if anyone makes an inline steel hook (which I prefer) with a shaft that doesn’t taper. Maybe such a thing doesn’t exist, it might be too fragile.
I used laundry starch to block. Maybe I should have bleached it, but a little dish soap and peroxide seems to have removed the hand oils.
I’ll take piggwiggy96 Robin’s advice in future and just plan on machine washing. It’ll be a little awkward when I work with color thread though.
2017-11-12 Blocked and Starched!
All done!
I’m not sure why I didn’t weave the loose ends in before I blocked and starched, but it’s all done now.

I’ve chosen this project as my favorite for the year.
