This crown’s lacy loop pattern is my own design; it is also on my Orchid Jewel Summer hat.
CONSTRUCTION OVERVIEW: Adjustable ring of 6 sc in cotton yarn; then join second yarn for next rnd of 12 sts. 7 rounds of chain loops for the crown. Crown sides in single crochet. Change hook sizes to create shape of brim. Slip stitch the brim edge.
DETAILS:
Crown loop pattern (7.5” diameter):
- With cotton yarn and 5 mm hook, make magic ring, ch 1, sc 6 times into the ring, join w slip st while adding sparkle yarn.
- Holding both yarns, ch 1, sc 1 into each sc around.
- *Ch 4, sc into next sc, repeat around from * 10 more times. Chain 1, double crochet into the first sc of the rnd. (12 ch loops).
- Ch 1, sc into the last loop made. *Ch 4, sc into the next ch loop; repeat around 10 more times from *. Chain 1, double crochet into the beginning sc of the rnd. (12 ch loops).
- Ch 1, sc into the last loop made. *Ch 4, sc into the next ch loop; repeat around 10 more times from *. Chain 1, dc into the beginning sc of the rnd. (12 ch loops).
- Ch 1, sc into the last loop made. *Ch 4, sc into the next ch loop; repeat around 10 more times from *. Chain 2, hdc into the beginning sc of the rnd. (12 ch loops).
- Ch 1, sc into the last loop made. *Ch 4 (sc, ch 4, sc) into the next ch loop; repeat from * around 10 more times. Ch 4 sc into the next ch loop, chain 2, hdc crochet st into the beginning sc of the rnd. (24 ch loops).
- Ch 1, sc into the last loop made. *Ch 4, sc into the next ch loop; repeat around 22 more times from *. Chain 2, hdc into the beginning sc of the rnd. (24 ch loops).
- Ch 1, sc into the last loop made. *Ch 3, sc into the next ch loop; repeat around 22 more times from *. Chain 3, sc into the beginning sc of the rnd. (24 ch loops).
(Note to self: Next time, work hdc or extended sc instead of dc; dc were too long.)
Crown sides:
Work in a continuous spiral, moving a stitch marker as each rnd is complete.
- Switch to 6 mm hook. *Make 2 sc into the next ch loop, sc into the next sc, repeat from * around. (72 sc).
- Switch to 5 mm hook. Sc into each sc around for 12 rounds.
- *Work 1 sc into the next sc, repeat from * 5 times. Move marker to last stitch to indicate end of rounds for crown.
Brim:
Worked each round even or with increases with the hook size listed as follows:
- Hook 5.5 mm: working 1 rnd with 12 increases evenly spaced. (84 sts)
- Hook 5.5 mm: work 1 rnd even.
- Hook 6.0 mm: work 1 rnd even.
- Hook 6.0 mm: work 1 round with 12 increases evenly spaced. (96 sts)
- Hook 6.0 mm: work 3 rnds even.
- Hook 6.5 mm: work 1 rnd even. (96) sts
(Note to self: Next time, work #5 with 2 rnds, and #6 with 2 rnds.)
Edging:
Using 6.5 mm hook, worked 1 rnd of slip stitch. Fastened off, wove in loose ends. Blocked hat and flattened join.
(Note to self: Next time try for a smoother edge join: slip st and ch 1 before last single crochet round, join with slip st, then ch 1 and slip st around, join with slip st and fasten off.)

These are the net bags I use for yarn containment. Originally I bought these by the dozen for merchandising product sets when I sold cosmetics for a few years.
And here is my hat yarn laying in a cardboard file box lid after frogging back yet again while working out the crown design.
UPDATE 9/2014: This is in my “Annual Faves” set because I was perfecting my sunhat crown design, and I love the versatility of this hat. I wear it with jeans and with pretty dresses.
