Notes

Using the chart, stitch count, shaping, and colour inspiration from Ola (with multiple staggered waves), combined with Elizabeth Zimmerman’s Very Warm Hat in concept, for a double-layer reversible hat.

I needed a new warm hat and wanted to use EZ’s Very Warm Hat, and I had decided on colours but I hadn’t chosen a colourwork pattern to add yet (because I hadn’t done stranded in a while and needed some practice) when I came across Ola!

I am living near a Great Lake’s waterfront now, but I grew up on islands of Atlantic Canada so this pattern and its significance to the designer really resonated with me.

Ola colourwork hat:

Provisional cast on using Navy wool yarn on US 5 needles, join in the round and switch to size 3 needles, knit 4 rounds, purl one round (edge of hat), knit 4 rounds.

Using Patons navy as CC and Irish Rose teal mohair as MC work chart according to pattern.

Using Irish Rose teal mohair as CC and Eatons teal as MC, work chart offset by 4 stitches, starting from round 6 (omit two plain rows).

Using Eatons teal as CC and Patons natural as MC, work chart without offset, starting from round 6.

Knit more 14 rounds (about 40 rounds total), then begin decreases using natural wool yarn (13 more rounds = about 53 rounds)

Lining/striped hat:

Undo provisional cast on and pick up live sts onto size 3 needle.

Using size 5 needle, knit 4 more rows Patons navy (8 total)

Knit:
9 rounds Irish Rose dark teal (17 rows total)
8 rounds Eatons medium teal (ran out, wanted 9 rows) (25 rounds total)
9 rounds Patons natural (34 rows total)
5 rounds Knit Picks taupe (39 rows total)
Weave in all ends so far, leaving ends hanging on inside in case of need to undo.

Start crown shaping as for Ola hat and continue through remaining stripes:
4 more rounds KP taupe (44 rows total)
2 rows MacAuslands natural dark grey/brown (46 rows total)
Weave in latest ends.

Continue shaping as for Ola hat through:
7 more rows MacAuslands grey/brown (about 53 rows total)
Draw end through stitches and weave in carefully from the right side, leaving a tail of yarn hidden inside.

After wearing this hat on my errands (on foot, through the snow, uphill both ways, etc) for a few days with -10 to -15 C windchills, I am loving how very warm it keeps most of my head, but wishing it was a tiny bit longer and significantly more snug fitting around my ears instead of the slightly flared/bucket shape.

So, I picked up stitches in the turning ridge (progress shot pictured after the goofy series) and then added a squishy i-cord bind-off. Now it’s perfect!

Added i-cord version shown in new outdoor pictures -- but despite the lack of snow on the ground that day, it was too cold to take off the coat and scarf, nevermind anything else!
