Notes

Test knit for Laura Aylor. Start date is May 31, due date for completed product with pictures is July 20, 2024. Slightly off gauge, working a size with extra ease to net the difference.

Cast on this evening, 20 rows into the yoke. No issues to note at this time, everything is clear in the instructions and all the knitting is straight forward.

Not 100% sure I am happy with the size I chose, I’m on gauge based on the last project I worked with this yarn, and I love the fabric, but it looks like it might be smaller than I would have wanted. If so, I know plenty of knit-worthy recipients that will love it.

Currently using a US0 and US2 needle.

Assessed the situation this morning and took another gauge reading. 24 stitches in 4” - that would make my finished object about 7” smaller than the called for size.

Frogged and started over with needles 2 sizes up. Now on US2 and US4. Made it through row 40, definitely better in terms of sizing and the fabric isn’t too loose.

Much better now, and much closer to the correct gauge of 20 stitches in 4”.

Tied in second skein on row 33 of the body. Tied in third skein on row 2 of the finishing section (alternate rows).

Only a few looooong rows left of the body before the BO and sleeves! So far a great knit, fast to work up despite the length of the rows and each row is easy to memorize for simple knitting.

The body is off the needles! No issues with the pattern at all other than a few minor typos. Needs to be blocked out a bit, so it will grow in length just a bit more. The yarn was prewashed, and it bloomed with such a nice halo as I worked it up. It’s already super soft, another soak and bocking will make it even softer.

Probably won’t get the sleeves started for a few days, we’re headed into a heat wave of 90-100F and having a large pile of yak fiber in my lap doesn’t sound like the best idea for keeping cool.

Getting back to the sleeves now. I have 52g left of my third skein - will weigh again after the first sleeve.

Based on that, I used 248g of yarn for the body, which is 1,067yds used. The pattern calls for 1,475yds total for my size (M2), so it’s pretty spot on. If I finish both sleeves with the remaining 52g then I’d be somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,290yds total. Add a 10% buffer and that would be 1.419yds - can’t get much closer. slightly_smiling_face

Sleeve one only took 13g of yarn, so this is a for sure 3 skein project with almost a 1/4 skein to spare.

Knit 3 extra rows of the sleeve before checking the errata to see that there was an inadvertent extra repeat in the sleeve directions. I left the extra three rows in but did not do the extra repeat. I think the extra three rows should stay there - it made the sleeve just long enough to touch my elbow - perfectly sized for a half sleeve. On to sleeve two now!

Yep, sleeve 2 is finished and I have 25g of yarn left in the third skein. Great mileage on yarn for a large wearable!

Blocked and photographed.

Final measurements - 34” from center neck to the bottom of the back, and 47” from the shoulder seam to the longest point of the front.

The final garment is super soft, warm enough for a chilly evening, yet open and airy enough for any time of the year. Completely versatile and useable.
