I made the following changes to the pattern. I didn’t like the thickness in the middle caused by knitting the overlay separately (Delores agreed, who needs added thickness?).

Instead of knitting the overlay as a separate piece, I picked up the stitches along the purl bumps. I picked up 92 stitches instead of 91 so that each section would have 3 purl bumps in between with the exception of the 2 bumps on each end. I made the overlay section longer by having 5 cable/lace sections instead of 3 as written in the pattern.
