Notes

Yarn free at a guild meeting. This is the second attempt at the pattern.
I cast on 144 stitches.
Skipping the buttonhole and the opening for the visor. Worked 2.5 inches in K2P2 ribbing, then knitted two rounds to encourage the fold. I plan another two inches of P2K2 ribbing then I will change to stockinette stitch and work a round of K10, K2Tog before changing to Seed Stitch, which spreads. From there I plan to follow the instructions for rounds between decreases, but in order to not disturb the Seed Stitch pattern, I will decrease immediately before and after each of six markers each decrease round.
I plan to begin the brim at 66 stitches from center back, and I will center the mock button over the brim. I will work the ear flaps in Seed Stitch to avoid the curling one gets from the Stockinette Stitch that the pattern calls for. This is why I chose it for the main part of the hat.
Jane Kivlin’s hat had the ear flaps a little too far back on the head, I will be careful to check the location before blindly following the directions from the museum’s pattern.

No change to the plan. The yarn on these size needles works up a little looser than I thought it would. I might knit a lining for it. Time will tell.

I hated the visor so I pulled it off. The button is okay. I did the ear flaps and they were kind of flimsy so I lined them with crochet. The fabric is porous so I am lining the hat with stockinette stitch worked on size one needles because the hat was a bit loose.

I did run out of yarn before finishing the lining. It was completed with a scrap.
