Uses chart 105 from the Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible and Yoruba Bird from Folk Hats by Vicki Square. See if your public library has them. Cotton balls or polyester fiberfill needed as well for stuffing the bird. Cast on 89 stitches. Join, being careful not to twist. Place a removable stitch marker for end of round. Work five rounds of seed stitch, increasing by 7 stitches randomly placed on last round, using your favorite increase method that doesn’t leave a hole. 96 Stitches. Repeat stitches 1-16 of the two preparatory rounds of the chart, noting that the end of round marker falls between stitches 16 and 1. Work Rounds 1-26 of the chart twice, moving marker as needed when adjacent stitches are involved in a decrease or decorative element. If work measures six inches, skip to round 27. Else, * work round 23 once, then round 24 three times, repeat from * until work measures 6 inches. Round 27: repeat round 23, adding a removable stitch marker between each pattern repeat keeping the end of round marker unique. Rounds 28 and 30: * K1, SSK, P to 2 stitches from next marker, K2TOG, repeat from * around, 12 stitches decreased. Round 29, K2, P to one stitch before next marker, K1, repeat from around. Repeat rounds 27-30 until only one Purl stitch remains in each repeat. Round 31: K2, P1, K1, repeat from around. Round 32: K1, SSK, K1, drop marker, repeat from around, do not drop end of round marker. Round 33: Knit. Round 34: * K2Tog, K1, repeat from * around. Round 35: K2Tog around. Break yarn, leaving an eight inch tail for attaching the bird. Secure remaining stitches by drawing tail through them with a yarn needle. Make and stuff bird following instructions in Folk Hats pp. 45-46, including finishing. If instructions don’t work for you, keep in mind that when ordering a lifted increase, the author assumes that one will not count the following knit of the other stitch arising from the same stitch that was lifted in the next instruction. When sewing bird onto hat, make sure to secure the pieces broadly together, perhaps over a square inch, to keep the bird from wobbling. Enjoy!
