Notes

3/12: Finished at last. I need to block it and post finished photos. The cotton/acrylic yarn was rough on the hands so I probably would not recommend using it for this shawl but it does make a nice lightweight spring or summer garment.

3/7: Starting on the last row, started the 5th ball of yarn. Almost there now!

2/23: Started 5th skein at Row 41. 6 more rows left and then the border! whoo hoo

2/19: Only on Row 39 now….going sloooooow. Will it ever end?

2/18: Just started row 36 and started the 4th skein of yarn at the end of Row 35.

2/12: Just finished Row 29 and starting the 3rd skein. Can’t figure out what to do next. Arggggh

Ok, I figured it out. Duh…I just need to chain 4 for the first TC of the next row, and then do 4 more Triples…

2/11: Slow going -- the mesh part is tedious, but I’m on the last row of that part at last!

2/5: I decided to alter the Row 24 big space a little different from weavrmom’s solution. Instead of chain 11, I am doing ch5, DCtog in the middle two DCs from below, ch5. This makes the V come more to a precise point.

The yarn is starting to go faster now as the shawl is getting wider.

2/3: I am starting on the second skein at Row 19. I will have lots of leftover yarn!

2/2: At Row 15, I’m still using the first skein. So I won’t need as much yarn as I thought. Might end up using only 6 or 7 skeins. We’ll see!

You really do need to pay attention to what you’re doing, I have found. I noticed a slight error I made 2 rows below (I made a couple of extra chains in one section) but I am not going to rip it out. I already ripped out half a row to correct a more noticeable error. These extra chains won’t be noticeable, and besides, there should always be one error, according to Native American Spider Woman lore…

1/31: After initial confusion, and asking copperscaledrago (Jane) and weavrmom to clarify the pattern, I finally started. Pattern is tricky because it’s just a snapshot, and the ends just trail off, so you have to figure out how to begin the even rows by mirroring the ends of those rows. This may be familiar to those who have made doilies before, but I never have so it is messing with my brain a bit. But it’s a lot of fun! Don’t be scared!

These directions supplement the chart, which is pretty easy to follow once you get going! So get going!

One thing I’ve noticed is that the chart calls for only 2 chains in a turning chain for a DC, but I’m used to doing 3. Same thing for a TC -- the chart calls for only 3 turning chains while I use 4. But I don’t think this will make a big difference, I hope!

Ch 108 (I added extra per weavrmom’s suggestion just to be safe. I will pick them out later)

Row 1 - DC in 5th chain from hook, 7 DC, ch 1, sk ch 11 more times. In the 12th motif, ch 1, DC in last stitch. Turn

Row 2: Ch4, sk ch, 7DC, ch2, sk ch and in the last one, after the 7th DC, ch1, DC in the top of the 4th chain from the first row. turn

Row 3: ch 4, sk 1st DC, 5 DC, ch4, sk next DC and in the last one, 5DC, ch2, end with a DC in the top of the turning chain. Turn.

Row 4: ch6, sk 1st DC, 3DC, ch7, sk next DC across. In the last one, do 3DC, ch3, DC in the second chain from the ch4 of last row. Turn.

Row 5: Ch6, DC in ch3 sp from last row, ch3, sk DC, DC in the middle DC of last row section, ch3, (DC, ch5, DC) in ch7 space, in the last section, do ch3, sk DC, DC, ch3, DC in last chain space, ch3, DC in turning chain of previous row. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 4 (counts as TC) and do 3 more chains (total of 7 chains), DC in chain space from last row, ch9, (DC, ch5, DC) in the ch5 arch from below. In the last one, after the ch9, DC in last ch space, ch3, TC in top of turning chain from previous row, turn.

Row 7: ch 2, 3DC in ch3 sp below, ch2, (DC, ch3, DC) in ch9 space below, ch2, 7DC in ch5 arch below. In the last one, after the DC ch3 DC ch2, do 4 DC in the last chain space. Turn.

Row 8: Ch3 (counts as 1st DC), (ch1, DC in next DC) 3 times; ch2, 3DC in ch3 arch from below, ch2, (DC, ch1) in the next 6 DCs, end with a DC in the 7th across. In the last section, after the 3DCs, ch2, (DC ch1) in next 3 DCs, ending with a DC in the top of the turning chain from below. Turn.

Row 9: ch2 (first 1=sc), sc into ch3 space below, (ch3, sc) 2 times, ch2, DC into next DC, 2DC in next DC, DC, ch2, (sc, ch3 into next 6 spaces of pineapple), across. In the last section, after you ch2, (sc in next ch3sp, ch3) twice, then sc in the last space, ch1, and end with sc in third ch of turning chain. Turn.

Row 10: Ch1, sc in same st, (ch3, sc in next sp) twice, ch3, DC in next two DCs, ch2, DC in next two DCs, ch3, (sc in next ch3 sp, ch3) in next 5 spaces. In the last section, end with sc, ch3, sc, ch3, sc in the last sc below. Turn.

Row 11: Ch 5 (chart shows 4, but I added one for the turning DC), sc in space below, ch3, sc in space below, ch3, DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, (sc in next ch3 sp, ch3) in next 4 spaces. In the last section, end with sc in next ch3 space, ch3, sc in next ch3 space, ch2, DC in last sc below. Turn.

Row 12: Ch1, sc in the ch2 space, ch3, sc in next ch3 space, ch3, DC in next 2 DCs, ch5, DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, (sc in next ch3 sp, ch3) in next 3 spaces. In the last section, end with sc in next ch3 space, ch3, sc in last ch space. Turn.

Row 13: ch3, sc in ch space below, ch3, DC in next 2 DCs, ch9, DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, (sc in next ch3 sp, ch3) in next 2 spaces. In the last pineapple, I did an sc in the next ch3 sp, ch2, sc in the top of the sc from below. Turn.

Row 14: Ch6 (1st 3 = 1DC), DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, 5DCs in ch9 space below, ch3, DC in next 2 DC, ch3, sc in ch3 sp from pineapple below, ch3. In the last section, instead of sc in ch3 space below, do a DC in the sc from below (first sc of Row 13). Turn.

Row 15: Ch6 (1st 3 =DC), DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, DC in next 2 DCs, DC, ch3 DC in same stitch, DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, DC in next 2 DCs, ch5. Iin the last section, after the last DC in next 2 DCs, ch4, DC in top of turning chain from previous row (in other words, in top of the ch3). Turn.

Row 16: Ch6 (1st 3 ch = DC), DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, DC in next 3 DCs,, ch6, DC in next 3 DCs, ch3, DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, End with a DC in the turning chain of the last row.

Row 17: Ch4 (1st 3 = DC), DC in next 2 DCs, ch3, DC in next 3 DCs, ch9, DC in next 3 DCs, ch3, DC in next 2 DCs, ch1 to last section. End with a DC in the top of the turning chain from below. Turn.

Row 18 - Ch3 (= DC), DC in next DC. sk next DC. Ch 5, DC in next 3 DCs, ch3, DC in chsp, ch5, DC in chsp, ch5, skip next DC, DC in next 2 DCs, sk next DC, ch5….I think the diagram is clear, probably clearer than these directions!
