This tammy was my primary handmade for the August 2014 Geek and Nerd Swap, theme fairy tale. My swap partner listed Andersen’s “The Snow Queen” as one of her favorite fairy tales, and I selected this tammy for the part of the story when the Snow Queen carries Kai to her palace in her sleigh.

Pattern: I think this pattern is for a lovely tam, and the directions are clear and easy to follow without being too specific. My major complaint is the lack of gauge and sizing information. I don’t find it useful to know what needle the designer used to produce a small-to-normal sized hat; I prefer numbers.

Yarn: I am collecting a pretty group of Cascade Heritage sock yarn skeins and leftovers, so I stuck with it for this project. I think it worked well.

Execution: I started with a cable cast-on on 2.5mm wooden dpns for the corrugated ribbing, which I thought was beautiful but not the most effective form of ribbing. I switched to a circular once I got passed the ribbing and increased to enough stitches for the tammy to fit comfortably. My gauge before blocking was 8 st/in, and this produced a hat that fit on my 22in head.
