Used a worsted yarn from my stash. This weight, plus the larger needles, turned the 2 year-old sized hat into one to fit an adult woman’s head (size 7).

Followed pattern until ear length. Made them 5 inches instead of 3”. Then, to make them a little more pointy, I finished them like this:

R1: Decrease: k2tog, k2, repeat from; 18 sts remain.
R2: k18.
R3: Decrease: k2tog, k1, repeat from; 12 sts remain.
R4: k12.
R5: Decrease: k2tog, repeat from; 6 sts remain.
R6: k6.

Cut yarn and thread through the remaining 6 sts, pull tight to cinch opening.

I also made the chin ties as a 3 stitch i-cord, but only made them about an inch long.

I made paper inserts for the ears out of cardstock, to help them keep their shape, and secured them to a wide headband with gardening wire. Then I fit the hat’s ears over the paper inserts, and wore the headband together with the hat so that the ears would stand up straight.

Finally, I created “pigtails” out of black yarn and wire (for shape) and sewed them inside the back of the hat.
