My heritage is Faroese/American. I wanted to be a winter bride, and get married in an ice hotel, but I was marrying a guy from South Florida, so I had to compromise. It was a fall wedding, (like 80 degrees!) but my outfit still spoke of my dream of being a viking bride in the cold north with touches of inspiration from my heritage.
The outfit was pretty much my design, though we borrowed from some patterns fairly heavily in some cases. All was knit/crocheted by mom with a little help/finishing by her friend Donna, and my MIL. My mom was finishing the jacket while I was putting my wedding make up on an hour before the ceremony!
I believe the jacket is from a pattern directly, though I don’t know which one. It was too short for my upper body since I’m kind of a top-heavy girl. It was held closed with a traditional Faroese brooch from my (handed down from my mother) Faroese national costume. I bought a champagne (bridesmaids?) dress from David’s Bridal or similar to go under the front and back panels. The panels were held on to the dress by a bunch of (borrowed) silver buttons which are also traditional Faroese. The panels themselves are reminiscent of the Faroese national costume, which, on the women, has a criss-cross chain across the bodice. You can see the dress without the jacket in one of the night shots.
The “veil” was three or four crocheted curly/ruffly strips held onto my head with a hair clip. You can see the clip in one of the night shots.
The last three images are the women’s Faroese costume as worn on the day by my sisters.
