Almost the same notes as for the last time I knitted this pattern.
NOTE: Gauge given in pattern is measured over garter stitch. My older copy of the pattern didn’t specify this, though I think a later version does.
MODS
Neckline looks a little skimpy in the pattern so I cast on 58 stitches instead of 50. The 58 sts affected my increase rows (see a couple of paragraphs below).
I cast on with a longtail cast-on as I like to use the “wrong side” of that cast-on as the public side when knitting garter stitch, since the cast-on looks like garter stitch. I didn’t use a larger needle; for me there’s no issue with the stretchiness of longtail, so you don’t necessarily need to increase your needle size by one or two sizes for the l.t. cast-on.
Because of the side of the cast-on I used as the RS, rows 8, 16 and 24 would have fallen on the WS. The pattern says to increase on those rows. I don’t know if we are meant to increase on the WS but I preferred to do it on the RS so my increase rows were 9, 17 and 25.
I started with 58 sts so increased slightly differently:
Incs. on row 9 - K5, M1, K3, *(M1, K4) x 3, M1, K3, *(M1, K4) x 3, M1, K3, *(M1, K4) x 3, M1, K3, M1, K5 (--> 72 sts)
… my notes here were scribbled, so st nos. hopefully work out…
Incs. on row 17 - In this row I increased by 30 sts, not 31, which gave me the same number of sts (102) as in the pattern.
Incs. on row 25 - as per the pattern, except the pattern omits a M1, so it should be K6, *M1, K2, repeat from * to last 6 sts, M1, K6. (-->148 sts) NOTE: In each of the 3 increase rows the pattern seems to omit a M1, immediately before the last K5 or K6.
Slipstitch pattern - a couple of rows after starting the slipstitch pattern I worked an increase row, increasing evenly by 16 sts to bring my stitch total to 164 sts. Why? Because I read ahead and saw that there was only going to be 28 sts put on scrap yarn for the sleeves, and 14 stitches cast on at each underarm! That’s 1/3 of the total number of stitches for the sleeve coming from the underarm. It seemed wiser to incorporate more stitches in the yoke and cast on fewer at the underarms.
Garter stitch yoke was 13 ridges.
Dividing for sleeves - I divided for sleeves after working two more rows than the pattern… looks to be on row 19 instead of 17… (which meant where the pattern said to start with a certain pattern row after picking up sleeve stitches, I had to remember I’d be on a different row).
The pattern uses 42 sleeve sts but I think 42 is overdoing it for a small cardigan. So I distributed my stitches differently:
I put 26 sts into each front and 44 sts for the back; I put 34 sts into each sleeve, casting on 8sts at each underarm and decreasing 2 sts at each underarm on next row (to help close up holes)… therefore leaving me with 6 extra sts at each underarm.
ie 26-34-44-34-26….
Once I added in my 6 underarm stitches on each side I had 40 sleeve stitches which is plenty.
I put a marker at midpoint underarm and every 4th or 5th row I did an increase each side of the marker, twice. I then did a single increase on each side after another 4 rows. This gave a little more width to the cardigan since by fiddling with the stitch numbers earlier I’d slightly decreased the number of stitches in the body.
Buttonholes on rows 5, 21 and 37. Might make the last buttonhole on row 36 next time.
The pattern says to decrease (by several sts.) on the row before starting the garter stitch hem. I didn’t do that; I simply used 3.5 needles and the same number of stitches. I think the way the pattern does it, there could be some pulling iinwards at the hem. You can see it in some of the project photos.
I made my sleeves 15cm long. I went by measurement rather than worrying about how many slipstitch rows I’d worked, though I did check against what the pattern said - I worked 14 slipstitch ridges whereas the pattern said 12. (I also relied on length for the body rather than just the number of slipstitch ridges. I did in fact have 13 body slipstitch ridges, as does the pattern.)
I tapered my sleeves - a preference of mine rather than wide sleeves all the way down on skinny baby arms. I decreased 2 sts every 5th or 6th round (ssk, work to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1); did this 5 times so I ended up with 32 stitches).
NOTE: In the instructions for the in-the-round sleeves the pattern says to slip KNITWISE when doing the slipstitch pattern. I’m sure it should still be purlwise, otherwise you will be twisting the stitch when you work it on the next row. So I made sure to always slip PURLWISE.
I was a little disappointed in the yarn colour - all I saw on the web, projects and yarn photos, looked to have a reasonable amount of aqua/mint in the colour mix and the aqua was what attracted me. I bought mine online, and my two balls seem to have a smaller amount of aqua and more of blue and coral.
