Notes

So, I made myself an Osgood scarf!

Due to the magic and wonder of HD, I was actually able to count the rows per section on the majority of the scarf. For the sections I couldn’t see clearly enough to count, I referenced Witty Little Knitter’s season 13 pattern for the original, or in a handful of sections, made an educated guess.

I used Vanna’s Choice yarn because I already had most of the colors needed, and I was able to get the other two colors inexpensively on sale at Michaels. The only exception is the off white… I used Red Heart Aran for that because I had a big ole’ One Pounder that I picked up cheap last Thanksgiving.

The colors on Osgood’s scarf are much brighter than the original. I used Vanna’s Choice Charcoal Grey, Eggplant, Honey, Mustard, Scarlet, and Pea Green (discontinued), as well as the aforementioned Red Heart Aran. The finished scarf is about 16’ long not counting the fringe, and I was thankful that I had enough of the pea green yarn, though only just. I only have scraps left of the scarlet and pea green skeins.

Judging by the drape, it looked like a 1x1 rib, so that’s what I went with. I used size 9 16” circulars, and I cast on 43 stitches because I wanted to begin and end each row on the same kind of stitch, knit/knit rs, purl/purl ws. I just guessed on the width based on my experience of knitting Rory’s Four scarf, but I actually got a clear enough shot on our television to count midway through, and I was in the right neighborhood. The original looks to be between 42-44 stitches wide. I also had to guess on the tassels.

The entire scarf took me a week to knit. I didn’t work on it every moment of the day; I’d say I spent an average of 3-5 hours each day working on it. All things considered, I’m glad I went with the size 9 needles. I could have maybe gone up a size, but the scarf would have been even longer, and the stitches look fine when the scarf is actually worn.
