Notes

Modified for my larger feet; circumference is 8.75” and length heel to toe 10”.

The wide strips are 7 sts wide instead of 6 sts.

The toe section cast on 28 sts instead of 23. Wish I had gone further to 33, because these socks could have used another 3/4” of length before working toe. Instead I just added stockinette to lengthen toe.

I added two rows to the gussets by beginning my short rows at 22 sts instead of 18 sts. I centered the gusset between the two purl ridges of the long thin strip, so I could have a ridge of purl at the side of the foot. In hindsight, Anne’s way (original pattern) is better.

Thin strips worked sideways have 52 sts from cuff to heel, and 80 sts from cuff to toe.

I picked up 7 sts at the wide strips, 3 sts at the narrow strips. For the gussets, the pattern says to pick up 16, but I think that 8 or 10 would have made more sense. Since I had added some rows to my gussets, I picked up 12 sts for each gusset.

Heel turn started across the center wide strip; I placed the first decreases just at the edges of this strip so I had seven center sts before I started decreasing. I ended up with 29 sts for the sole and 31 for the top of the foot, for 60 all around. And what do you know -- same thing for the cuff!

I worked the cuff in garter instead of the icord garter because I thought 60 sts around sideways on my chunky calves would not be good. As it is now, I like it very much.

This was a fun pattern; I can imagine that folks would have some anxiety about the funky heel and the garter, but the sole is stabilizing and the toes are thin because they are stockinette, so all feels fine and fits into my clogs and Birks. I blogged about the details quite a bit, here.

What a great way to use yarns with long slow color changes!
