Notes

This is my 2nd or 3rd Full Hansel Hap which is just about one of the best and most used knitted things I have made. I love it. The yarn, the design-everything about it.

It’s a part of an ongoing art project called The Big Idea. A show (or not) comprised of 3 items; a photography portrait, a landscape photograph and and a knitted or textile item that unites the 2 images.

This hap is in a grey/B&W colorway that mirrors the 2 photographs.

The Hap Frame is from the tutorial Kate Davies made on constructing your own Hap Stretcher. My first attempt, using the dimensions indicated was out of poplar wood. I used a spray lacquer black paint that ended up looking terrible.
I remade the stretcher with oak, used a drill with a proper drill stopper (highly recommended) and took my time. I drilled pilot holes for everything. I also made sure my holes for the dowel pegs were large enough so I didn’t have to shove each peg into place along with the glue. I like the look of the polyurethane over my hand painted design. I could have gone crazy here but kept the design reasonably simple.

Getting the hap onto the stretcher was a bit of work. What seemed to work is threading the string through the top points, anchoring the first point. Hang the top border of the Hap, then thread the remaining 3 sides, looping them around each peg as you go. Keep strong tension on all so the hap doesn’t fall off. Another person would really help this process.

Thanks for all of the kind words.
