Notes

General Notes (See Below for Full Blog):

My grandmother was looking at the socks I made for my daughter for Christmas and said something to the effect of, “I ought to ask you to make me some socks.” She likes to wear socks around the house and to bed, but finds that a lot of socks bind up at the top, and the two pair she has that don’t are starting to fall apart. She didn’t mean that as an actual request, but I took it to heart anyway. If I can knit one grandmother slippers, I can sure as heck do it for the other one too!

This pattern was reverse-engineered from a pair she loaned me as an example of what she liked. Pretty plain sock for US ladies shoe size 7.5 narrow width, with a very stretchy cuff.

Gauge 6st/in, 7 rows/in (when swatched flat in stockinette; in the round is slightly tighter and I have not measured it yet)
CO 48 loosely, join in the round
Loosely knit 1.75” 1x1 rib
Knit 2” stockinette
Heel flap 2.5” long over HALF the stitches
Remember: ssk, p2tog
Turn heel with 6st in the middle
Pick up 10 for gusset
Remember gusset decreases: k2tog, ssk
After gusset knit plain until foot measures 7.5”
Decrease every other row until 12st remain
Remember: k2tog, ssk, k2tog, ssk
Graft toe
Weave in ends
Repeat all from the top
Launder once
Put in large envelope with nice card and send off to Ma-maw ;)

I’m not going to go to all the bother of posting the pattern in Rav’s database because it’s SO basic I’m sure I’d be redundant, but I have no objection to anyone using my notes to knit their own bedsocks for fun, profit, charity, whatever, if said notes are useful in that respect.

Full Log:

26 December 2014: Well. This should be an adventure. I know I can do it!

30 December 2014: Was almost all the way to the first toe when I realized the heel wasn’t right. Frogged back to the beginning of the heel flap and tried again.

02 January 2015: First sock done. A little smaller than the prototype, but I’m hoping that when it’s “broken in” it’ll stretch out a little. Which is, after all, what often happens. On to sock #2!

05 January 2015: Second cuff, “leg”, and heel flap done; ready to turn heel, which I will do correctly the first time this time. Had to restart cuff after a few rows--was knitting TOO loosely, lost a DPN, didn’t pick the live stitches back up correctly and couldn’t quite fix it. But I’m all better now.

08 January 2015: With the pattern established and kinks apparently worked out, this is going VERY quickly. Just started toe decreases for the second sock. Should finish up tomorrow. Yay!

09 January 2015: Done and done. The result is not an exact duplicate of the original, but allowing for stretching as a result of time and wear I think it will be close enough. Sending them off to Ma-maw ASAP.
