So my husband wants fingerless mitts. OK. “Did you think to ask the knitter in the house?” I wondered. He didn’t want to impose. I rolled my eyes and started plotting.
Then when I asked him for more specifics, he pulled out a pair of fleece-lined mittens and noted that he liked the lining.
Oh, and he didn’t want any thumbs on it.
I found exactly zero patterns on Ravelry that conformed to these specs. LOL So I’m modifying this one. I’m going to try the afterthought thumb that this pattern uses, but just bind off pretty immediately instead of knitting it up to a full thumb. Also, I’ll stop the thrum pattern and return to ribbing at the top to leave the fingers free. Currently it looks like he wants an overall length of 12-13cm with the thumb hole 4cm from the top.
Roving is Ashland Bay Superwash Merino.
Wish me luck, everyone…

Upon finishing the first mitt, I had him try it on. He had some requests for modifications for the second mitt:
- Looser cuff (because of specific issues with his left wrist, not because it was too tight in a general way)
- Add a little flap at the top to help keep his fingers warmer without adding length to the palm side
- Find a way to keep the roving from poking out of the thumb hole
Hence the different appearance between the two hands. Changes I made, specifically:
- Cast on and do the cuff with the larger needles, only using the smaller ones for the top ribbing, flap, and thumb hole
- For flap, knit garter stitch back and forth over the top half of the stitches, then bind off the whole round (picking up stitches along the edges of the flap to finish the edge)
- Tacked down the roving around the thumb holes with thread
- I also accidentally did only two plain rows between thrum rows on the second mitt up to the thumb hole (which is where I realized what I’d done), resulting in a much fluffier left mitt. Husband says he likes this, though.
I still intend to pick up stitches to add the flap to the right mitt, and Husband has asked me to do something (maybe a few stitches of another color or something) to help him differentiate between the two mitts. But they’re basically done.
Now he wants a second pair. Sigh. Daughter also mentioned wanting some, but it might have been a one-off “oh that sounds cool” more than a request in earnest.
