I used a crochet cast on to avoid having a tight edge, and so my squares would lay flat. I casted on 29 stitches for my first square. I knitted one row, then started doing the centered double decreases every other row, and just plain knitting on the wrong side rows. Each block is about 4.125” square and uses about 10.5 grams of yarn.
For my second square (blue), I crochet casted on 14 stitches, then picked up 15 stitches along the right side of my first square. Then knitted one row, and decreased from there.
For my third square (black), I picked up 14 stitches along the top side of my first square. Then I crochet casted on 15 stitches, knitted one row, then decreased from there.
For my fourth square (clay rose), I picked up 14 stitches along the top of the blue square, then one stitch in the corner of the beige square, then 14 stitches along the side of the black square (total 29 stitches). Then I knitted one row, and then began decreasing as before.
I continued using these same joining strategies for the remaining blocks. I made my blanket 8 blocks wide by 12 blocks tall. In the end, I wove in 192 yarn ends.
