A few points to mention:
-
I cast on using wooden needles, but I very quickly switched to metal. Some people have complained about the slipperiness of the mohair yarn on the metal needles, but I actually prefer it; it makes doing the clusters slightly less annoying and helps me keep my stitches loose.
-
Knit VERY loosely, particularly on the row before you knit a cluster. If you don’t, you’ll find yourself wanting to burn your project. ;)
-
On the row after you knit the clusters, be sure to keep the cluster stitches in order. Not keeping them in their correct order will cause them to twist and your clusters to look more like clusterfucks.
-
The instructions say that you should essentially bind off when there are 3 stitches left on the needle. Well, sorry, but once you get down to 6 stitches on the needle, things get wonky. At that point, I just knit the last 3 stitches together through the back loop to maintain the steady decrease. At 4 stitches, I think I did YO, k2tog, k2tog, pass previous stitches over, and then somehow just bound off on the next row. It worked, anyway.
-
Picking up 63 stitches of mohair is absolutely no fun. Remind me again why this couldn’t be knit in one piece from end to end? Oh, you say it can’t be done? You lie.
-
Because the row at the middle that you just took 4 hours to pick up was essentially a wrong-side row with star clusters in it, I suggest knitting 3 rows of garter and then proceeding with the appropriate star cluster row (which, in my case--and probably yours--is row 2, so I counted that as part of my first repeat of the chart for this end). This keeps the right amount of space between clusters.
4/26/2020 - Finally finished. I’ve been using Quarantine to get through a few WIPs.
10/19/16 - Somewhere along the line, I knit a few repeats on the second half of this, and I knit the 8th-10th repeats tonight.
8/2 - Finished the first half and the first repeat of the second half.
2/11 - 12th-16th repeats and the first decrease repeat. Down to 55 sts.
2/9 - 5th through 11th repeats
2/8 - 2nd through 4th repeats
2/7 - Cast on and knit the first repeat.
