When Kate suggested using this pattern to make Roar mittens, it was a no-brainer for me. I had just finished knitting my first Roar hat and I had also test-knit Red Light Green Light. I immediately cast on.
My first set of Red Light Green Light was in the toddler size, and they fit my 3-year-old, but with absolutely no room to spare (and the thumb is probably three rows too short for her). So I decided to do Child Small, which are definitely a little large, but will fit for a while. I did cut about five rows out of the body of the mitten, because otherwise they would have been way too large. Also, I had already knit the spikes, and I knew that if I cut out those rows, four spikes would be a perfect fit.
For the spikes: I used size 6 needles -- that’s one size smaller than I used on the hat and its spikes, but one size larger than I used on the mittens. (Mittens are on 5s, with 4s for the ribbing.) I cast on 12 stitches, which was just right. Then I followed the instructions from the original Roar pattern for decreasing. Again, I knit these in Magic Loop, and that is a perfect method for doing these. By the second mitten, I could knit each spike in less than 5 minutes!
It was not easy to get good photos of these. When my daughter gets home from school, I will try to get some modeled shots. But trust me, they are very cute! I’ve got at least one more Roar hat (maybe a Roar set!) in my brain before I move on to something else. I need to do it now while I have the spike pattern memorized!
Thanks, Kate, for the great idea!
