Notes

I used 8ply acrylic from stash and a 3.5mm hook and I worked tightly so the poppies don’t flop when attached to stems later on.

Asta’s pattern is great. Just watch out that it’s written in English notation so treble means dc (US) and double crochet means sc (US).

This pattern is beginner’s plus because you need to read carefully and work both front and back loops. If you’d like an easier poppy (like the ones shown in the photos on this project) you can find the patterns on my other remembrance day project (poppies #1 & #2) https://www.ravelry.com/projects/susansands/5000-poppies-...

Bob Wilson has added the pattern here in Ravelry but it’s also on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/5000Poppies/686844308057098/.

Construction
Petals are worked in rows. Each petal uses 12 of the 24 stitches from round 2 and you overlap them by working into just the back loops of the 1st 4 stitches and just the front loops of the last 4 stitches (leaving the other loops available for the petals next to it). So, for petal 2, fold the 1st petal forward to see the 4 back loops left unworked and start working petal 2 there (4 in back, 4 regular under both loops, 4 in front only). For the 3rd petal, start in available back loops from petal 2, then work 4 unworked stitches then the front loops of 4 stitches available from petal 1.

mods

  • worked an invisible join to end round 1, so I only worked 2ch to begin that round as then invisible join creates a stitch above those chains (see great tutorial on invisible join when changing yarn here http://mrsmicawber.blogspot.com.au/2012/06/pardon-me-but-...)
  • started round 2 (1st round of petals) with a standing stitch and worked into back loops only of centre for the spiky effect it creates
  • only worked ch2 at start of row 1 of petals
  • used the yarn ends to sew petals down to keep them neatly in place.
