ok, edging basic 5 hole “tooth”
all even rows knit
you increase 1 st each row till you have 5 holes
then work one row to end, and bind off 5 sts
then repeat

co 12 sts using a provisional cast on.. put safety pin in sts to pick up later (left corner)
1). s1, k2, yo, k2tog, k1, yo, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k3
3). s1, k2, yo, k2tog, k2, yo, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k3

12, co 5 sts, knit remaining
start again.

make teeth to desired length -- I use about 3 ft.
do an orenberg style corner on right.. place pin on this corner.. this will be right side.
use 3,2,1 method to make corner
place marker as to signify the beginning of pattern
pick up all slip sts on way back to left side corner
make another orenberg style corner on left side picking up the “saved sts”
place marker as to signify the beginning of pattern

knit next 5 rows making sure to follow the 5 hole edging on each side of shawl.

concept --
I use two types of markers to separate patterns
2 colored one to show this is the pattern area
2 white one to show this is where a solid (blank/non pattern) area is
mark row as follows:
edging on ( colored but I use row counter here)
k3, pm (white)
knit first pattern - diamond
pm (white)
k3 pm (colored)
k3, pm (white)
knit second pattern - berries

knit third pattern - bowties

knit edging

that is how I break them up that is the concept.
you must decide how many sts you have when you pick them up on the tooth edge. then figure out your patterns from there.

we want to have a box of a pattern within another box of a pattern.
so,, for example when we start out we do a whole row of diamonds across. for my pattern that is 25 rows and 20 sts across make 1 diamond.. pad spaces between diamonds to make fit within the number of sts on the needle.

then we subtract 40 from the total number of sts. that will be the 2 diamonds on each end.
knit the diamond row.. slip the marker and knit complete across to the other diamond area.
make the diamond, make the edging, and knit back. make the edging. repeat till diamond pattern is complete.
turn repeat for 5 rows to have a blank row between the diamond and the next pattern. -- look at picture 2.

on 6th row. knit edging, diamond, move marker and knit 6 sts for blank area going vertically, pm.. start second pattern -- eyeball what the blank area should be and put enough sts in to make the vertical line emulate the horizontal line. do this on both ends.

add the berries pattern

continue this “square within a square” concept until you reach 1/2 way point, then reverse total patterns to end.

the pattern is printed so that 1/2 of the page goes on a magnetic board.

at end of shawl, do a lace bind off using the 5 hole teeth pattern..

after turning the upper right corner using 3,2,1 method, then pick up 1 sts when tooth goes to center, k2 tog, then continue on,, not doing a slip sts first.

the pic shows the concept on how this is worked. no need to do a cable cast on,, the sts are already there. the needles are just worked perpendicular to each other.

when last row, and equal number of sts , do a 3 point bind off or graft using garter grafting method
