Notes

Several years ago I found a small wooden rocking chair that fit me and my very small apartment. However, it is unpadded and uncomfortable to sit in and I rarely use it. So I bought some padding and will knit a cover for it - with a tide-pool theme. And of course, being a biologist, I will try to make everything as accurate as possible; if I have not seen it in a BC tide-pool, it won’t be included here.

The first denizen of my tide-pool is an octopus. Because he is 3-dimensional and would not be too comfortable to sit upon, I think he will hang out on the rungs, in the lower inter-tidal zone.

The next denizens are a couple of jellyfish: the larger tiger jellyfish will hang out in the lower reaches with the octopus, but the smaller moon jellyfish is often found on beaches and in tidepools.

Aug 2013: The stone/sand/cobble base of the chair is finished and knitted/sewed on. Now I just need to create all the folk living in the tidepool.

… later: I have some seaweed and a few tidepool invertebrates knitted and crocheted. The creatures are knitted in slightly flattened 3 dimensions. I want them to look 3-D, but I need to be able to sit on the chair without it feeling lumpy. So far, I think I’m succeeding.

Oct 2013: The chair-back is finished, with all the sea-wrack cast up on the cobble-y beach. I have 4 different species of seaweed:

  • Fucus (rockweed),
  • Macrocystis (giant kelp),
  • Nereocyctis (bull kelp),
  • Prionitis (coralline red algae).

The sub-littoral zone on the rear of the chair and the lower rungs is also finished, with

  • an octopus,
  • a tiger jellyfish (orange)
  • a moon jellyfish (white)
  • you can also see the holdfasts for several of the seaweeds.

Jan 2014: I have most of my tide-pool creatures finished. So far we have

  • 3 sea stars (a purple star, a blood star and a brittle star)
  • 2 sea anemones (green)
  • 2 sea urchins (red and purple)
  • a chiton (turquoise and grey)
  • a sea cucumber (orange with red/yellow/orange feathery gills)
  • a sea lemon (bright yellow)

Aug 2014: Last two animals finished!

  • crab (orange and grey)
  • stickleback (small brown fish which lives in tidepools)

And so I declare this tidepool finished!
