Received the pattern in June 1 and began reading it to familiarize myself with it and to ask questions or make comments on the first time through. I needed to get some more needles in the size called for. Now I MUST have all the needles I will ever need…! Truly Must log them into Ravelry then I will avoid purchasing more than I need! Before THAT I need to get them actually organized. Maybe this week…
These socks were knit on two 24” Chiaogoo circular needles. This worked really well.
The cast on was a Turkish cast-on. It was new to me. I watched several YouTube videos to learn this technique. I liked Suzanne Bryan’s the best. She is a fabulous teacher.
After the cast on and then started the toe I thought about the fact that cable stitches usually “pull in” and make the fabric tighter. I pulled out some larger needles (US Size 2 needles) to start the cable pattern, then after a few rounds I decided if I was going to be a good test knitter, I should knit just as the designer requested so I went back to the smaller needles. I did not, however, take out the previous stitches…!
When I got to the heel of course i had to knit one sock heel at a time but that was not a problem. Just a bit of fiddling with the needles but worked great.
The first part of the heel was knit in German Short Rows which was also new to me. Here I watched even more YouTube videos! One was by Norman at Nimble Knitter. Still, I liked Suzanne Bryan’s instructions the best. Athena did the second part of the heel a bit differently…with a K1 P1 top section. I followed her directions even though it was different. It worked like a charm! I thought the heel would be too short but it was not.
Flax—started at 76 grams ended with 49 grams. 76 minus 49 equals 27 grams used. 166 yards per 50 grams. 3.32 yards per gram. 27 times 3.32 equals 89.64 yards yarn used for Lin Socks Test Knit.
Turquoise stripes—started at 87 grams ended with 27 grams. 87 minus 27 equals 60 grams used. 166 yards per 50 grams. 3.32 yards per gram. 60 times 3.32 equals 199.2 yards yarn used for Lin Socks Test Knit.
The leg continued the Twin Tree cable design with five repeats total for my size.
For the cuff we K1tbl, P1 then use the Italian/tubular cast off. More YouTube videos! Again I went with Suzanne’s instruction and watched several times. Because my ankle/leg are larger than average I was concerned about whether the leg and cuff would fit. It actually did, though I think the next socks will be knit with a few more stitches on the needles after the first half of the leg. I will have to figure that out with Kate Atherley’s Custom Sock book, I think.
Total yarn left over from the six skeins I purchased to make The Seedling Stitch Socks and then this pair: 431.6 yards. Since the yarn used was 288.84 yards, it looks like I can make yet a third pair with these 6 skeins of Patons Kroy Sock yarn. I will start with the toe up and the smallest number of yards of yarn (turquoise stripes) left over, then the next (flax), then the final one (Mid-Century Stripes), and see if I can use up all the yarn. I believe I will make the leg all K1, P1 ribbing and do increases every so often so I can have a bit bigger leg/cuff and slightly better of fit at the top with the Italian/tubular bind off. Just a thought but these will have to wait for a while in queue!
