Notes

April 5 All done!! I finished knitting the lining on the 3rd. I did not bind off the lining. Instead I grafted it to the bound off edge of the plaid side.

I seamed the sides with mattress stitch, just like I would a sweater.

The directions say to space the fringe about an inch apart. I did that (and took a pic), but decided I’d prefer to have them spaced about 1//2 inch apart.

I’m so happy with how it looks.

March 17 Yarn order arrived - and yes it was the correct dye lot! Yay me!

March 12 - cast on back with 20 fewer stitches - and back to Limone yarn.

One of the on-line places that I contacted to see if they had the Limone in my dye lot came through for me. So I frogged the Barley (only 4 inches this time) and cast-on the Limone (again…). I checked the blanket widths against each other again and was still a bit too wide.

So here’s the deal. Unless you are an expert intarsia knitter and get the same gauge across the color changes, you’re going to have to make some adjustments to your stitch count for the lining.

The parts of the plaid that were knit in just the Limone or Aunt Martha are knit in the same guage as I’m getting for the lining. The difference comes from the vertical stripes. I tried super hard not to tighten the stitches for the stripes, but it was a challenge and I didn’t quite get it right. So, the stripes pull the blanket in a bit and make it narrower than it would be if it had been knit all in one color (like the lining is).

It’s not an insurmountable problem. If I’d been thinking ahead, I would have just taken my gauge for the stockinette stitch portion and multiplied it by the blanket width to come up with a new stitch count for the lining.

March 10 - casting on back with 10 fewer stitches - and another color.

I discovered that my LYS did not have more of the Limone that I decided to use to knit the lining. I should have known this since I’m the one who purchased the last that they had. Of course this is a discontinued color…

I really want a solid lining, so I’ve decided to knit the lining in “Barley” Comfort DK. This color complements the other colors used in the blanket nicely.

When I took the Limone that I had knitted for about 12 inches (!) off the needles, I laid it out on top of the blanket front and discovered that it’s knitting up wider than the front did, so I’m casting on fewer stitches for this go-around.

March 5 - Finished front. Pinned it on my blocking board before ironing. Measures 26” wide and 28” long.

I love this pattern. At first I took about 20-30 minutes per row depending if it was a horizontal stripe row or not.

I used bobbins to hold the yarn for the vertical stripes and used stitch markers to track the 10-stitch block of stitches for the vertical stripe sections. I used ziplock bags to hold together the groups of three bobbins per section to help keep the bobbins from tangling.

So it was a bit tedious, but worth the effort.
