Super warm hat! I’m making these to donate to charity.
It gets COLD here.

Loosely inspired from “Doubled hat” pattern in “Norwegian Knits with a Twist” by Arne & Carlos -- using their method of increasing/decreasing for hats (minus all of the colorwork in their pattern!!). I’ve also encountered this same increase/decrease method in many other hat or toy (spheres) patterns, so it’s certainly not original.

This hat is created in one piece (in the round), from crown to crown. My goal was a hat 9” in height (big enough to cover ears fully). At a gauge of 4 sts per inch, 88 sts around will get you 22” circumference (for a large hat), and 80 will get you 20” circumference. I have a big head - so what you see here is a 22” hat “modeled” on a 22” head :)

If you want 21” circumference, increase to 80 sts, then add 4 more sts somewhere (making sure to do the same thing on both sides of the hat). So, keep notes as you do this pattern so you can do the same thing on the other side.

My lovely model heads are Hilda and Hans :)

I was able to get an entire 22” hat from one skein of HLILTY Print (252 yards, 142 grams) with 21.3 grams left to spare. Aim for about 215 yards, based on this.

Use whatever your preferred method is for knitting in the round.

---DIRECTIONS------------------------------------

CO 12 (be sure to leave a tail long enough to close up the starting hole later)

Crown/increases:

  • Round 1: Join for knitting in the round (careful not to twist sts): Knit 12

  • Round 2: (K1, Kf&b, K1, place marker) around

  • Round 3 and odd rounds: Knit

  • Round 4 and even rounds: (K1, Kf&b, knit to last stitch before marker, Kf&b, K1) around. Each round will add 8 more sts. If you want prettier/paired increase sts, could use make-ones, but I find those too tedious to matter.

  • Repeat these rounds 3 and 4 until you get to 80 sts (for 20” hat) or 88” (22” hat), ending with your last increase round. At some point, before you get too far, take your beginning yarn end, work it through the starting hole, and cinch it together / weave in yarn end.

Stockinette section:

  • Knit even until total height is 7” (or to desired length before ribbing - take note of how many rounds you did in stockinette)

Ribbing section:

  • K2P2 ribbing for 2” (or to desired total hat length - taking note of how many ribbing rounds you did)

Can adjust the stockinette and ribbing sections until you reach the desired total hat height. Keep track of how many rounds you did, because you’ll need to do the same on the other side

Starting flip side of hat:

  • Here’s where you’d switch yarn/color if you want to…could also reverse the order of the rib (i.e., P2K2) so it sits inside itself once the hat is doubled. I’ve tried it both ways, and actually prefer to just keep with the K2P2 throughout (though, reversing it does add a bit of a turning ridge, which can be nice).

  • Continue ribbing for for the same number of ribbing rounds as the first half.

  • Knit even for the same number of stockinette rounds as the first half.

Decrease rounds:

  • Split stitches into fourths (putting marker in between)

  • Round 1 and odd rounds: (K1, ssk, knit to last 3 sts before marker, k2tog, K1) repeat around. Each round will decrease 8 sts.

  • Round 2 and even rounds: Knit even

  • Repeat these two rounds until you have 16 sts left (last round will be an even K16 round)

  • Last round: (K1, K2tog, K1) repeat around (12 sts)

  • Break yarn and cinch through. Weave in yarn end, and save enough so you can turn hat into itself, and tack the two crowns together, weave in rest of yarn end.

---END OF DIRECTIONS---------------------------

Sept 3, 2023: HLILTY “Float Along”
Increase to 88 sts.
25 rounds knit (7” from crown tip)
24 rounds ribbing (4”)
25 rounds knit
Decrease rounds.
Perfect - I can successfully complete this hat with 1 ‘print’ skein of the HLILTY, with just a little left to spare (21.3 grams left).

Sept 25, 2023: HLILTY “Iced Sugar”
Increase to 80 sts (smaller, goal 20” circumference, 8.5 tall)
21 rounds knit (6.5” from crown tip)
24 rounds ribbing (4”)
21 rounds knit
Decrease rounds.
Turns out 8.5” is not long enough to totally cover my ears (I have a big 22” head), but should be perfect for smaller heads or kids. Otherwise, I think I will aim for 9” heightfor adults.

Also, next time, since I hate doing ribbing, I’m gonna do less ribbing (3” total, for 1.5” after folding), and knit until hat height is 7.5” instead.

Oct 18, 2023: HLILTY “Birchwood Cottage”
Version with less ribbing, more stockinette, 9” goal.
Increase to 88 sts.
28 rounds knit (7.5” from crown tip)
18 rounds ribbing (3”)
28 rounds knit
Decrease rounds.
A bit large! I think I prefer more ribbing as in prior versions. Went to my MIL

January 4, 2024: HLILTY “Sea Muse”
9” goal.
Increase to 88 sts.
23 rounds knit (7” from crown tip)
24 rounds ribbing (4”)
23 rounds knit
Decrease rounds.
