See notes on my first time making this: here, and how I join two hexagons together with slip stitch here (very brief video):

I am not starting with magic ring, it is much more consistent with the starting chain 6 ring.
Adding two additional rounds, same idea as the previous, remembering to skip the dc in the current round behind the fpdtr. On the second round for the same color, after joining with slip stitch, begin round with chain 3 (counts as first dc). Keep top of chain 3 loose to make it easier to work 2 dc into it in future round.
Round 7: 2 dc in first st, 1 dc in next, fpdtr two rows down (in second stitch from right in group of dcs), dc in next 3 sts in current round, fpdtr two rows down (in center of those three dcs between the fpdtrs there), dc in next 3 sts of current round, fpdtr two rows down (in second-to-last st in group of dcs), dc in next st, 2 dc in last st. Do this for each side, with 1 chain in between (as with previous rounds). Join to first dc in round with sl st.
Round 8: Plain round -- 2 dc in first and last st of a side, with 13 dcs in between (17 dc per side), separated by 1 chain in between sections.
You get a different effect if you use the same color for rounds 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8. The 8-round hexagon was 9.5 inches wide for me (from flat side to flat side), about 10 inches high from point-to-point. Each additional row of nested hexagons (pointed edge down) will add about 7.5” of height.
For the half-hexagons, with two rows per color, I worked in turned rows. Starting with adjustable ring (magic loop), ch-3, 2 dc, ch-1, 3 dc, ch-1, 3 dc. Then, chain 3 (counts as first dc in next row), turn, and proceed. Will want to be careful when joining subsequent colors so that the long sts are always on the right side (so, join new yarn on RS).
See picture with proposed layout.
Going to try the 60-30-10 rule for color balance. 60% primary (combo of pinks/oranges), 30% secondary (greens), and 10% accent (yellow).
