Used a twill pattern from handweaving.net #70110
8-shaft, 8 treadle
Modified per Weever to create borders (https://weeverwoman.blogspot.com/search?q=70110)
539 ends
7.3 yard warp for two shawls
24 epi
width on loom 22.45”
desired finished size is 22” wide, 84” long, 7 or 8” fringe
Plan to weave each shawl to 90” on the loom
fringe allowance 9” on loom
Warp is Red Purple
Ran out of Red Purple while winding the warp, so made a stripe of Fuschia. One pound of Tencel is not enough to warp for two shawls.
Beaded fringe made using Weever’s instructions (https://weeverwoman.blogspot.com/search?q=Beads) https://weeverwoman.blogspot.com/2009/01/good-twist-to-ya...
Beads: very tiny, from a mixed bead sale. Size 10 beads work well.
Hemstitch:
at start of weaving, 4-thread bouts, 4 picks into web. Simple hemstitch. Then, treadle 4 rounds of 5,6,7,8 treadling. This border measures 1” including hemstitching.
Fringe: measure 9” on loom. Twist 2 hemstitched bouts (2x4 threads) 35 turns one way, then 35 turns the other way. Tie knot at 7”.
Shawl #1
Fushia weft.
Project woven to 88 1/4” on loom including border, not including fringe.
Shawl #2
Iris weft.
Woven to 90 1/8” on loom including border, not including fringe. Same number of repeats, I think? But longer.
Finishing: soak in hot soapy water for a few hours. Multiple rinses. Put in spin cycle in dryer. Iron press while damp. Hang overnight to dry. Steam press in Singer steampress, and one more final hard steam press with hand held iron.
