Notes

This sweet little 4-shaft draft from Sarah Jackson was a delight to weave. Threaded straight draw, holding two different color threads together to wind the warp, changing one thread color in even sections, alternating colors in the heddles. If you use closely related colors near each other on the color wheel, the graphic design is subtle. Scarf #1 is treadled turned taquete. The magazine draft offers a second scarf on the same threading, with gradient weft. I chose some cashmere mill ends from Colourmart, from a discount “floppy” set. While weaving, I noticed the purple yarn wasn’t 2/28, but was instead a singles wool, probably lambswool, which fulled upon wet finishing, giving the scarf a soft and lofty hand. The yarn held up just fine on my little Harrisville loom.
My warp was long enough to weave a cowl too.
Details:
218 ends of 4 colors plus floating selvedges
4 yards
24 epi
9” wide on loom
7.5” wide after wet-finishing
78” length on loom
77” length off loom
64” finished length not including fringe (about mid-thigh wrapped open around neck)
17% shrinkage (would have been less with 100% cashmere)
Washed in hot water and Orvus paste, three washings to remove spinning oils. Fourth wash in Dr. Bronners peppermint Castile liquid soap.
I wove in a small matching ribbon in two picks of plain weave. Bow is sewed down for security.
Hemstitched in 6-thread bouts with 2/200 red silk, cut 1” fringe with rotary cutter.
I followed the pattern treadling and each section measured approximately 11”, which is much shorter than the pattern, which used Tencel. I ran out of coral and red weft early on, so I had fun treadling the purple and orange boxes different sizes to the end.
