Notes

My first cabling project - very happy with it :-)

CO 72. Held the yarn double.

Clue 1.
Used Barbara Walker’s recipe for twisted stitches, plus reoriented first stitch when doing left twist (LC in the pattern).

Clue 2.
Followed the pattern.

Clue 3.
Heel turn part:
Rep rows 3 and 4, ending with a RS (knit side), leaving one heel stitch in the opposite corner unworked (which would be worked if I turned and purled back).
Picked up stitches along one side of heel flap, knitted across instep according to the chart, picked up stitches along other side of heel flap and k2tog, closing the last gap in heel turn section.

I learnt this trick here some years ago and have been using it ever since.

Clue 4.
Since the recipient’s feet are both wide and short, I started the Clue 4 on instep while still decreasing gusset stitches (5 on each side, i.e. 10 rounds to finish in Clue 3).

Toe decreases:
Began, as pattern says, 5 cm short of desired length.
6 decrease points per round, evenly spaced.
Since the socks are 72st, it would take 12 decrease rounds to close the toe.
First 6 of those were knitted interspaced with 2 plain knit rounds.
Last 6 - one plain knit round in between.
Was left with 3 stitches, closed them with a needle.
I experimented a little bit with the toe. First part of decreases was done with SSK, last - with K2tog. SSKs look a bit rugged, but I’m fine with that.
