Notes

A simple tabby weave scarf for my first try at weaving on my rescued table loom. Already learning lots.

The scarf is off the loom! As soon as it dries, I’ll be able to declare it finished. I had a few minor mistakes, one which warranted repair, all involved accidentally dipping or overshooting a few warp strands. This likely happened when the shed got too small. I note that with this loom the beater hinge is closer to the castle than to the take up beam. This make the beating more inefficient the closer you are to the beam. It limited the space where passing the shuttle was easy to do and the weft could be put into nice alignment with the beater to less than 2 inches of woven fabric.

As a result, I found myself trying to squeeze in a few more passes when I really should have paused, taken up a bit more weaving on the beam, and then continued. Now that I realize that repairs may be needed due to such efficiencies, I see they are not efficiencies at all.

I can see where LeClerc set up the Nilus table loom this way to maintain the ability to fold the loom for transport, but it’s a shame that it sacrificed usability so much. I may look at modifying the loom so that the beater is removable for transport, and with a new hinge closer to the take up beam.
