Notes

Cast on in honor of Shark Week on the Discovery Channel!

I was getting a gauge of 3.5 spi and 5 rpi, so I had to adjust the pattern accordingly. I knit 3 rows of stockinette between each increase until I had 70 stitches, then increased every other row until I had 78 stitches. After I cast on for the dorsal fin, I decreased every other row until I had 76 stitches, then knit the rest of the hat normally.

I picked up and knit 5 stitches for each tooth, which I shaped according to the pattern but knit in stockinette stitch.

When I finished the teeth, I picked up 76 stitches behind the teeth for the blue ribbing. Since I hate picking up stitches, I cast off 32 stitches for the forehead, placed the next 16 stitches on a holder, cast off 12 stitches for the back of the head, worked on the next 16 stitches as the first ear flap, and then went back to the other 16 live stitches to work the other earflap. This put the earflaps further back on the shark, so they actually covered my ears.

I used an excessively complicated pattern for the tail. See this post for details!

Used two skeins with 18 grams left over. Used 2 22mm buttons for the eyes.
